Veronica Giuliani: “a giant of holiness!” and the mysterious cloth that wiped the face of Jesus on way to crucifixion…

From La Lucia di Maria

It was said by Pope Pius IX: “Saint Veronica Giuliani is not a saint, but a giant of holiness”. Words that make you think about her extraordinary nature.

But it is not the only one of the statements that outline the  greatness of Santa Veronica. There is a long list.
And when I read it, I was amazed at how special this Saint is, of which I knew nothing until recently.

Pope Leo XIII: “No human creature, except the Mother of God, was honored more than you with supernatural gifts and that you gather in you the extraordinary graces bestowed on one of the most famous saints”.

Cardinal Pietro Palazzini: ” The mission of Saint Veronica has yet to begin in the Church. We must stop on the aspect of the Atonement, which has a large part in the Diary of the Saint and which gives us the right to point out it as Master, par excellence, of the atonement doctrine ..

Saint Veronica is known as the woman who offered a cloth to Jesus so He could wipe His face on the way to His crucifixion. The cloth is believed to exist today in the Vatican and is considered one of the most treasured relics of the Church.

Saint Veronica is not mentioned in the Bible, but is known by Catholic tradition and at the Sixth Station of the Cross, “Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus.”

Tradition holds that as Christ was walking to Calvary, his face dripping with sweat and blood, Saint Veronica, a bystander, was moved with compassion. She approached Jesus and offered Him a cloth which He accepted and used to wipe His face. The image of his face was subsequently imprinted on the cloth.

There are no stories from the period which speak of Veronica either before or after her act of compassion. We do not know when she was born or when she died. The veil and the legend surrounding it became very popular in the thirteenth though fifteenth centuries when the veil was on public display.

Indulgences were granted for people who performed devotions before it. The veil may have been destroyed in 1527 by the Sack of Rome. Many reproductions were created, and it is unclear if the veil kept by the Vatican is the original or a reproduction.

In 1616, Pope Paul V banned the production of all copies of the veil. In 1629, Pope Urban VIII went a step further and ordered the destruction of all copies, or that existing copies should be delivered to the Vatican. Anyone who disobeyed this order was to be excommunicated. The Veil of Veronica has since been kept from the public.

There are six known copies in the world, none of these relics have been photographed in detail or have been subjected to forensic testing. The Vatican’s relic is displayed, although briefly, on the 5th Sunday of Lent each year. Saint Veronica is the patron saint of laundry workers and photographers. Her feast day is celebrated on July 12.

And more quotes on Santa Veronica Giuliani

Father Lazaro Riarte: “In Saint Veronica the most remarkable thing is not so much the great penances, nor even the mystical phenomena: but the abundance of mystical light and the precision with which she masterfully explains , as I think no mystic has done – not even San Giovanni della Croce -, the diversity of the divine “communications” she had.”

Dausse, correspondent of the Academy of Sciences of Paris: “Santa Veronica is the most sublime and necessary subject of study that occurred after the Gospel”.

Jena-Joachin Bouflet, writer: ”I was reading Veronica, Teresa of Avila and Catherine of Siena: and this fed my prayer. But it is Veronica who gave me a living love of the Cross and an understanding of the redemptive function of suffering “.

Piero Bargellini, writer: ”The pages written by the great Capuchin are considered to be among the highest and most beautiful in mystical literature . When, as hopefully, the proclamation of the doctorate obtained by the “disciple of the Holy Spirit” will take place, the biography of Veronica Giuliani will be concluded “

The relationship with the Virgin Mary

S. Ragazzini, theologian: “No Marian experience .. it is so rich and so profound .. one has the impression of being in contact with a beloved of Mary in exceptional form”.

Saint Veronica had a very special relationship with the Virgin, so much so that in the Diary written for obedience, recently published in seven volumes including the correspondence, Mary Most Holy, she called her: ” My dearest daughter among all … heart of my heart”.
