The Story of Saint Francis De Sales

The Catholic Church commemorates, today, a very important figure: the Bishop and Doctor of the Church, St. Francis de Sales. What was the miracle that made him Holy?

St. Francis de Sales (1567 – 1622) represents one of the clearest examples of clarity of exposition and ecclesiastical doctrine. Not by chance, on July 19, 1877, Pope Pius IX proclaimed him among the Doctors of the Church. The Saint, after an excellent formation, through which he then decided to embrace life in Christ, dedicated himself in a particular way to preaching. The events related to his work in Switzerland, especially in Geneva, are well known. His great charisma and important intellectual gifts then led him to do an excellent job during his episcopate.

In fact, the saint became titular bishop of Nicopolis, only to be called to lead the diocese of Geneva. Among other things, St. Francis de Sales was a very important author of works of doctrine. We remember, in particular, one of his most important works, “Introduction to the devout life (Philothea)”. Francis de Sales became a saint during the pontificate of Pope Alexander VII, on April 19, 1665. Let’s see what was the miracle that made him a saint.

St. Francis de Sales: the miracle for canonization

As is well known, for the purposes of canonization, a second miracle is required, after the one required for beatification. In the case of San Francesco de Sales , reference is made to the miraculous case of Girolamo Gelin, dating back to 1623, a few months after the death of the Holy Bishop. It was April 30 of that year, when the young man (he was fourteen) Girolamo, was crossing a river with his younger brother Francesco. While crossing the waters, the young man fell and was overwhelmed by the waters.

After hours of searching, the young man’s body was found, lifeless. The same brother described it as “bloated and ugly”. People, passing through the streets, moved away from the boy’s body, because of the “stench” that emanated. The miracle occurred when James suddenly raised his arm, invoking Saint Francis de Sales. Some people, at that vision, fled, others cried out for a miracle. On May 4 of that year, the parish priest of nearby Les Ollieres went to Annecy, together with the Gelin brothers , to thank the venerable Francis de Sales.

Glorious St. Francis de Sales , your name carries the sweetness of the most afflicted heart; your works drip the most chosen honey of piety; your life was a continuous holocaust of perfect love, full of true taste for spiritual things and generous abandonment in the loving divine will. Teach me inner humility, the sweetness of the face and the imitation of all the virtues that you have been able to copy from the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Amen (prayer source: prayers for the family).
