The first impulses to the devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus come from the German mysticism of the late Middle Ages, represented in particular by Matilde of Magdeburg and St. Gertrude of Hefta (second half of the 13th century).
However, the devotion to the Sacred Heart in the modern sense begins with Saint Francis de Sales (1567-1622). The masterpiece of the Saint of Savoy is
“The treaty of the love of God – Theotimus”, in which the history of the world appears as a “love story” to be discovered in the heart of Jesus:
“I will establish my dwelling in the furnace of love, in the heart pierced for me. At this burning hearth I will feel the flame of love so far so languishing reanimate in my entrails. Ah! Lord, your heart is the true Jerusalem; let me choose it forever as a place of my rest … “.

THE TWELVE PROMISES OF JESUS TO THE DEVOTES OF HIS SACRED HEART
1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state.
2. I will put peace in their families.
3. I will console them in all their sentences.
4. I will be their safe refuge during life and especially at their death.
5. I will spread abundant blessings on all their businesses.
6. Sinners will find in my Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.
7. Tepid souls will become fervent.
8. The fervent souls will rise to great perfection.
9. I will bless the houses where the image of my Sacred Heart will be exposed and honored.
10. I will give priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.
11. The people who will propagate this devotion will have their name written in my Heart, where it will never be canceled.
12. I promise in the excess of the mercy of my Heart that my omnipotent love will grant to all those who will communicate on the first Friday of the month for nine consecutive months the grace of the final penance. They will not die in my misfortune, nor without receiving the Sacraments, and my Heart will be their safe refuge in that extreme hour.
