Churchgoers in Mexico were left stunned after apparently witnessing a statue of the Virgin Mary shedding tears.
It is said that the alleged miracle happened in a church in El Canal in the state of Colima. After reports of the incident, hundreds of curious believers and skeptics headed to the place of worship to see for themselves. Footage captured and uploaded to social media showed what appeared to be small drops of clear liquid falling from Maria’s eyes and down her face. For some of those who live in the area, the ‘weeping Virgin Mary’ is considered a true miracle.ADVERTISING
Resident Víctor Ramos said: “Similarly, when we cry and our eyes turn red, the same thing happens with the painting. So a few tears started to flow. This is an event, a phenomenon that is happening here in the church,” reports The Sun.
While others in the area associate the Virgin Mary’s tears with the ongoing violence in Colima. Víctor added: “We can relate it to the … rates of violence experienced here in the state of Colima, also here in the community.”
At least 702 confirmed intentional murders were recorded by prosecutors in Colima until October of this year. Maria Mercedes Hernandez, a visitor, hoped that the Virgin Mary would allow the return of “peace” for Colima as well as for the rest of the world.
However, after the event was published in the world media, priest López Herrera indicated for ACI Prensa on November 15 that “that picture is a representation of the Sorrowful Virgin on which the author shed several silicone tears since its creation”.
“It’s not that those tears came to her because of the events that happened, she had them,” he said.
Father López Herrera explained that when “people from the community spread rumors about this alleged miracle,” the priest responsible for the shrine of St. John Paul II. “went and confirmed that it is not reality”.
“We appreciate the interest, but it’s not a miracle,” he concluded.
However, the question remains as to how people only now saw the tears that have always been on the statue.
