Life as a Transition: The Surprising Parallels Between Dr. Eben Alexander and Medjugorje
By Stephen Ryan
In his blockbuster bestseller Proof of Heaven, Harvard neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander provides an autobiographical account of a near-death experience that defies conventional medical explanation. He writes of journeys into another realm, reuniting with loved ones, and encountering a “beautiful lady” in a celestial setting.

As I read Dr. Alexander’s account, the messages of Medjugorje remained in the back of my mind. I was astonished by the similarities between the doctor’s testimony and the statements made by the Medjugorje visionaries regarding the afterlife. Both suggest a singular, profound truth: Life on earth is transitional, and eternity is our true destiny.
A Passing Flower
Medjugorje visionary Marija reinforces Dr. Alexander’s theme that our earthly existence is fleeting. Marija explains:
“Through the message she gave us, [the Virgin Mary] said that our lives must be like a flower and that we are here just in a passing way. Only eternal life does not pass. For that reason, she urges us to think more of the spiritual life and of paradise.”
This “passing” nature of life is a cornerstone of Dr. Alexander’s message as well. He views death not as an end, but as a graduation. “Death is just a transition; it is the journey and it does not end anything,” Alexander notes. “Our relationships with loved ones continue. We can connect with them after they have passed over… it’s a very powerful gift.”
Reuniting with Loved Ones
The desire to see those we have lost is a universal human longing. Dr. Alexander’s account offers hope, revealing that we meet our loved ones in the next realm—a component of the afterlife that provides immense comfort to those left behind.
This mirrors the testimony of visionary Ivanka Ivankovic-Elez. Speaking at the 2001 Medjugorje Youth Festival, Ivanka addressed a spellbound audience:
“Because every single human being is asking if there is a life after this one, I am standing before you and the entire world to answer: Yes. By God and Our Lady, I was given the grace to see my late mother during an apparition. My mom told me, ‘My dear child, I’m proud of you.'”
Travelers Toward Eternity
The visionaries often refer to us as “travelers.” Vicka Ivankovic-Mijatovic states unequivocally, “We were created for eternity.” This sentiment is echoed by the Virgin Mary’s messages, which urge believers not to bind themselves to material things: “Do not forget that you are travelers on the way toward eternity.”
Dr. Alexander’s journey through a seven-day coma led him to the same conclusion. He asserts that his experience proved “beyond any doubt the eternity of our souls,” adding that many will be surprised to find that their conscious awareness actually expands once they leave the physical limits of the human brain.
The Mystery of Consciousness
As a Harvard-trained neurologist, Dr. Alexander is uniquely qualified to discuss consciousness. He notes that modern science has no clear explanation for how consciousness could emerge from the physical brain. “The boundaries of science must be broadened greatly,” he argues. “I experienced something so profound that it gave me a scientific reason to believe in consciousness after death.”
The visionaries describe this state of post-death consciousness in nearly identical terms. Ivanka explains that Mary told her:
“You go to Heaven in full conscience: that which you have now. At the moment of death, you are conscious of the separation of the body and soul… One is born only once. The body, drawn from the earth, decomposes; it never comes back to life again. Man receives a transfigured body.”
Whether through the lens of a neurosurgeon’s medical crisis or the spiritual visions of Medjugorje, the message remains consistent: We are more than our physical bodies, and our journey is only just beginning.
