The Solemnity of All Saints
Today, Tuesday 1 November 2022, we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints. It is interesting that the Church deems this feast as solemnity. This means that this feast possesses the highest rank among Church’s celebrations.
All Saints is one of the 24 days which are solemnities and, thus, mark the annual liturgical calendar. All Saints solemnity is always celebrated on the same calendar date. It is known as “fixed” on the liturgical calendar. All Saints’ celebration starts with evening prayers on the day before. Since this year All Saints solemnity falls on a weekday, the daily Mass looks much like a Sunday liturgy, including three readings, the Gloria and the Creed. All the prayers of the Mass show on the event that is being celebrated. These added liturgical features aid to embellish the special attention given to these people.
The Catechism of the Catholic church has much to teach us on the saints. Who are the saints? In entry 956 we find:
The intercession of the saints. “Being more closely united to Christ, those who dwell in heaven fix the whole Church more firmly in holiness…. They do not cease to intercede with the Father for us, as they proffer the merits which they acquired on earth through the one mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus…. So by their fraternal concern is our weakness greatly helped.” [LG 49; cf. 1 Tim 2:5.] “Do not weep, for I shall be more useful to you after my death and I shall help you then more effectively than during my life.” [St. Dominic, dying, to his brothers.] “I want to spend my heaven in doing good on earth.” [St. Therese of Lisieux, The Final Conversations, tr. John Clarke (Washington: ICS, 1977), 102.]”
What do the saints do in Heaven? In entry 2683 the Catechism tells us:
“The witnesses who have preceded us into the kingdom, [Cf. Heb 12:1 .] especially those whom the Church recognizes as saints, share in the living tradition of prayer by the example of their lives, the transmission of their writings, and their prayer today. They contemplate God, praise him and constantly care for those whom they have left on earth. When they entered into the joy of their Master, they were ‘put in charge of many things.’ [Cf. Mt 25:21.] Their intercession is their most exalted service to God’s plan. We can and should ask them to intercede for us and for the whole world.”
Relying on the word of the Cathecism we too now are going to ask them to intercede for us and for the whole world. Here is the Church’s most powerful litany of the saints.
