This Mystery of the Rosary is the Most Popular and Often Prayed
The most popular decade of the Rosary is the Joyful Mysteries. These mysteries focus on the events of Jesus’ early life, from the Annunciation to the Presentation in the Temple. They are often prayed on Mondays and Saturdays.
Typically, a spiritual goal known as a “fruit” is also assigned to each mystery. From Louis Marie de Montfort‘s book Secret of the Rosary here are the original 5 fruits from the Joyful mysteries.
- The Annunciation. Fruit of the Mystery: Humility
- The Visitation. Fruit of the Mystery: Love of Neighbour
- The Birth of Jesus. Fruit of the Mystery: Poverty, Detachment from the things of the world, Contempt of Riches, Love of the Poor
- The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. Fruit of the Mystery: Gift of Wisdom and Purity of mind and body (Obedience)
- The Finding of Jesus in the Temple. Fruit of the Mystery: True Conversion (Piety, Joy of Finding Jesus)
The other three sets of mysteries are the Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesdays and Fridays), the Glorious Mysteries (Wednesdays and Sundays), and the Luminous Mysteries (Thursdays).
There is no right or wrong answer to which decade is the most popular. It really depends on the individual’s preferences and devotions. However, the Joyful Mysteries are often seen as a good starting point for those who are new to praying the Rosary.

These are traditionally grouped by fives into themed sets known as the Joyful (or Joyous) Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries. Pope John Paul II recommended an additional set called the Luminous Mysteries (or the “Mysteries of Light”) in his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae (October 2002).[
