The Botafumeiro is one of the world’s largest incensories (censer or thurible), suspended from the central dome of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia, Spain.
What It Is & How It Works

Scale & Build: Made of brass and bronze plated with silver, the vessel stands roughly 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall and weighs around 53 kilograms (117 pounds) empty. Loaded with charcoal and incense, it exceeds 100 kilograms.

The Operation: A team of eight red-robed attendants called tiraboleiros pull ropes attached to a pulley system high in the transept vault. By pulling in rhythm with the pendulum’s natural frequency, they pump energy into the oscillation.

Velocity: At the peak of its swing, the Botafumeiro sweeps through a 65-meter arc across the cathedral’s transept, reaching heights of 20 meters and speeds up to 68 km/h (42 mph), leaving thick clouds of sweet-smelling smoke trailing behind it.

Spiritual symbolism: In Catholic liturgy, rising incense smoke represents the prayers of the faithful ascending to God.

Practical history: During the Middle Ages, weary pilgrims arrived at the cathedral after walking hundreds of miles along the Camino de Santiago, often without bathing for weeks. Packed shoulder-to-shoulder inside the nave, the resulting stench was overwhelming; burning massive quantities of incense masked odors and was believed to ward off plagues and airborne illnesses.
