Could a Rwandan Genocide Happen Here?
Could a Rwandan Genocide Happen Here?

It was on April 7, 1994, only 27 years ago, that almost a million Rwandans were killed in a genocide in just a few short months. The Hutu-majority government directed killings that primarily targeted the ethnic minority Tutsis. The Blessed Virgin Mary had previously warned them of this conditional chastisement if the Rwandans refused to respond to her request for people to “listen and come back to God.”
In 1981, Mary began appearing in Church-approved apparitions at Kibeho, Rwanda. She emphasized the call to pray the Rosary and asked for penance and fasting, similar to her requests at Fatima and Medjugorje.
Mary showed the visionaries images of savage murders, machetes, a “river of blood”, people brutally killing each other, decapitated bodies, abandoned corpses with no one to bury them, and the putrefying remains of hundreds of thousands. These visions are now considered a prophecy of the ethnic genocide of almost 1 million people that later took place in their country.
On August 19, 1982, Mary appeared and, according to Father Gabriel Maindron, author of Kibeho, “The visionaries sometimes cried, their teeth chattered, they trembled. They collapsed several times with the full weight of their bodies during the apparitions, which lasted nearly eight hours without interruption. The crowd of about 20,000 present on that day was given an impression of fear – indeed, panic and sadness.” Apparently, Mary herself was sad.
Immaculée Ilibagiza, Rwandan genocide survivor and author of Our Lady of Kibeho, wrote that Mary had the visionary, Alphonsine Mumureke, repeat three times into the microphone an apparent lament for the failure to respond to her requests, “You opened the door and they refused to come in. You opened the door and they refused to come in. You opened the door and they refused to come in.”
Then, Immaculée reported, “Suddenly Alphonsine let out a gut-wrenching scream that cut through the startled crowd like a razor, ‘I see a river of blood! What does that mean? No, please! Why did you show me so much blood? Show me a clear stream of water, not this river of blood!’ the seer cried out, as the Holy Mother revealed one horrifying vision after another. The young woman was subjected to so many images of destruction, torture, and savage human carnage that she pleaded, ‘Stop, stop, please stop! Why are those people killing each other? Why do they chop each other?’”
Alphonsine was next shown “a growing pile of severed human heads, which were still gushing blood. The grotesque sight worsened still as Our Lady expanded Alphonsine’s vision until she beheld a panoramic view of a vast valley piled high with the remains of almost a million rotting, headless corpses, and not a single soul left to bury the dead.”
Mary gave a clear warning. She said, “My children, it does not have to happen if people would listen and come back to God.” She told them to warn government leaders, who belonged to the Hutu tribe, not to battle with the minority Tutsis.
Unfortunately, the warning was not heeded and, 12 years after the first apparitions, the two tribes entered a horrible civil war. One of the slaughters took place on the very spot where Mary had appeared. Twenty-five thousand people were killed in the place where pilgrims once knelt. The hands of a statue of Mary were shot off during the war and a bullet was embedded in her heart. Three of the visionaries were slaughtered in the mayhem.
Most of the victims were killed in their own villages or towns, many by their neighbors and fellow villagers. Hutu gangs searched out victims hiding in churches and school buildings. Sexual violence was rampant and over 250,000 women were raped.
Many of the deceased were chopped up and thrown in a river. As prophesied, machete-wielding soldiers killed almost a million Rwandans in the span of a few short months. This was one of the highest rates of killing in recorded history.
The Kibeho warnings were not just for Rwanda, but for the whole world. Mary said, “When I tell you this, I am not addressing myself strictly to you, child, but I am making this appeal to the world which is in revolt against God. I am concerned with and turning to the whole world to repent because otherwise the world is on the edge of catastrophe.”
Mary told one of the visionaries at Rwanda, “Cleanse your hearts through prayer. The only way is God. If you don’t take refuge in God, where will you go to hide when the fire has spread everywhere?”
The Rwandan people did not listen to Mary’s motherly guidance and were unable to escape the tragic consequences of the genocide. When the terrifying scenes shown to the visionaries became reality, and the Church approval came, it was simply too late.
Could it happen here in America? Let us not fail to respond to the requests of Our Lady of America and possibly suffer from what Sister Mildred, the mystic, wrote was Our Lady’s warning of a conditional just chastisement:
Unless my children reform their lives, they will suffer great persecution. If man himself will not take up upon himself the penance necessary to atone for his sins and those of others, God in His justice will have to send upon him the punishment necessary to atone for his transgressions. (The Diary p.12). (See the Our Lady of America website here.)
Mary still appears throughout the world pleading for prayer and fasting to bring conversions and peace. The alternative, she warns, is to suffer chastisements worse than those that have already occurred during the Third Millennium.
At Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina, on October 25, 1985, Mary appeared to the visionary Mirjana Soldo. Father Renée Laurentin, an authoritative theologian, reported that Mirjana said, “She showed me, as in a film, the realization of the First Secret. The earth was desolate. ‘It is the upheaval of a region of the world.’ “She was precise. I cried.” (Medjugorje’s Ten Secrets: How to Prepare, Lynch, Dan, John Paul Press, 2020, p. 95).
As the Blessed Virgin Mary requested in her apparitions in Rwanda and at Medjugorje, may we “listen and come back to God” through conversion, faith, prayer and fasting so that we may be at peace.

In these perilous times of chastisements, such as the continuing COVID -19 pandemic, natural disasters, governmental corruption and moral degeneration, you should also read my book, Chastisements, Preparation and Protection Against Them. It contains all of the devotional prayers and the promises of protection through His medal and Image that Jesus revealed.
“The great storm of cleansing that shall bring about the correction of the conscience of mankind has begun.… There is still the opportunity to seek shelter under my Sovereign Kingship. Take up my Devotion; enthrone my Image and pray my prayers.… Seek my great mercy while there is yet time. Terror will fall upon this world while consciences sleep. Pray that the greater number shall be saved.” (Journal 816, 824, 826).
