Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

May 24 is the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. During the Second Vatican Council, Pope Paul VI pronounced that Mary was the “Mother of the Church.” He made the pronouncement during his speech upon the closing of the third session of the Second Vatican Council on November 21, 1964. He said, “For the glory of the Virgin and our consolation, we proclaim Mary the Most Holy Mother of the Church, that is, the Mother of the whole People of God, both the faithful and the pastors.” Pope Francis confirmed this title in 2018.
Later, Pope Paul VI wrote in his Credo of the People of God, “The Mother of the Church carries on in heaven her maternal role with regard to the members of Christ, cooperating in the birth and development of divine life in the souls of the redeemed.”
St. John Paul II wrote in Redemptoris Mater that the Credo of the People of God was a reaffirmation of the statement that Mary is the “Mother of the entire Christian people, both faithful and pastors” and that the Credo “restated this truth in an even more forceful way.”
Then in 2018, Pope Francis confirmed Mary’s title as Mother of the Church and decreed that “the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church,” should be inscribed in the Roman Calendar on the Monday after Pentecost [the birthday of the Church] and be celebrated every year in churches throughout the world.
Mary is also the Queen of All Nations. In ancient Israel, the Queen was not the King’s wife, but his mother, since the kings had many wives, but only one mother. King Solomon’s mother, Bathsheba, was the Queen and sat at the right-hand side of the throne of her son, the King. (See 1 Kings 2:19–20). Therefore, since Mary is the Mother of Jesus King of All Nations, she is the Queen of All Nations.
This is logical. The Mother of Jesus King of All Nations is the Queen. Mary is the Mother of Jesus King of All Nations. Therefore, Mary is the Queen of All Nations. This title has not been proclaimed by the Church, but it is the truth.
St. John the Apostle saw a vision of Mary as Queen of All Nations. He was praying on the island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Ephesus in what is now Turkey where he was a prisoner of Rome. He saw a vision that is now described in chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation.
He saw a great sign that appeared in heaven. It was a woman clothed with the sun, as is in the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with the moon under her feet, pregnant with child and on her head, she had a crown of 12 stars, representing her queenship of both Israel and the apostles. She is the Queen Mother of the Church and of All Nations. She gave birth to a son, Jesus King of All Nations, who, as St. John wrote, “was destined to rule all the nations with a rod of iron.” (Revelation 12:5).
Upon her Assumption into heaven, Jesus King of All Nations crowned his Mother as Queen of heaven, earth, all nations and of all the angels and saints.
Pope Pius XII wrote, “We are taught that Mary, the Virgin Mother of God, reigns with a mother’s solicitude over the entire world, just as she is crowned in heavenly blessedness with the glory of a Queen. …
“Certainly, in the full and strict meaning of the term, only Jesus Christ, the God-Man, is King; but Mary, too, as Mother of the divine Christ, as his associate in the redemption, in his struggle with his enemies and his final victory over them, has a share, though in a limited and analogous way, in his royal dignity. For from her union with Christ she attains a radiant eminence transcending that of any other creature . . . the Blessed Virgin Mary should be called Queen, not only because of her Divine Motherhood, but also because God has willed her to have an exceptional role in the work of our eternal salvation.” (Pope Pius XII, Ad Caeli Reginam, To the Queen of Heaven). The feast of her Coronation is celebrated on August 22.
Jesus and his Mother want her to be known as the Queen and Mother of All Nations. (See Luke 1:31–33). This is, as she revealed, “because I reign as Queen beside my Son who is King, but my first and foremost title that he gave me under his Cross, ‘out of much affliction and anguish of heart… with many tears,’ (2 Corinthians 2:4) is ‘Mother.’ (John 19:27). I am Theotokus, the Mother of Jesus Christ who is God. I am the Mother of all souls, of all nations of the whole world.”
