Why pray the “Prayer Against Every Evil?

Beloved and recently-deceased Vatican exorcist, Father Gabriele Amorth, penned a “Prayer Against Every Evil” to fight against spiritual attacks.

In a world pervaded by skepticism, it’s easy to assume that none of our trials are spiritual. Yet, if  we consider that  Saints like Catherine of Siena and Padre Pio, were themselves tormented by demons, why not us?

Referring to demons,  Padre Pio said:  “The Devil does not want to lose this battle. He takes on many forms. For several days now, he has appeared with his brothers who are armed with batons and pieces of iron. One of the difficulties is that they appear in many disguises. “There were several times when they threw me out of my bed and dragged me out of my bedroom. I am patient, however, and I know Jesus, Our Lady, my Guardian Angel, St. Joseph and St. Francis are always with me.”

If the Devil was able to attack a holy man like St Pio, who are we to deny that it’s possible? However we not need worry because as Padre Pio said, our Lady, our guardian angel and a multitude of Saints are with us, if we put our trust in God.

Make no mistake: the best way to fight against evil is to remain in a state of grace, attend Mass and receive the sacraments.

Why should we fight to stay in a state of grace, aside from not being sent to hell? St Teresa of Avila inspires us:

The Church gives us lots of resources to fight the Devil’s wiles, including Catholic prayers of protection that we can use as well.

Prayer Against Every Evil

Spirit of our God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Most Holy Trinity, Immaculate Virgin Mary, angels, archangels, and saints of heaven, descend upon me. Please purify me, Lord, mold me, fill me with yourself, use me.

Banish all the forces of evil from me, destroy them, vanish them, so that I can be healthy and do good deeds.

Banish from me all spells, witchcraft, black magic, malefice, ties, maledictions, and the evil eye; diabolic infestations, oppressions, possessions; all that is evil and sinful, jealously, perfidy, envy; physical, psychological, moral, spiritual, diabolical aliments.

Burn all these evils in hell, that they may never again touch me or any other creature in the entire world.

I command and bid all the power who molest me – by the power of God all powerful, in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior, through the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin Mary – to leave me forever, and to be consigned into the everlasting hell, where they will be bound by Saint Michael the archangel, Saint Gabriel, Saint Raphael, our guardian angels, and where they will be crushed under the heel of the Immaculate Virgin Mary. Amen.
